2024 GRR! Youth Camp

GRR! will be held July 8-12 at the U of R Campus - Ridell Centre, with the Saturday, July 13 showcase at the Exchange.

What you'll do

Campers will get basic instrument instruction (bass, drums, guitar, keys or vocals), form a band, write and record an original song and then perform it at our final showcase. In addition, we offer fun workshops and activities that encourage creativity, positive self-image and identity, social activism and movement.

Time

Camp runs from 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday. The Showcase runs from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday.

Eligibility

GRR! encourages cis and trans girls and gender-expansive youth from all backgrounds to apply for camp. Youth need to be the appropriate age for the camp week that they select (aged 8– 14) as of the first day of the camp they are registered in. Campers who have attended 2 years in a row or more may receive lower priority during the selection process.

COVID-19 Safety

At this time, masking is not mandatory.

This policy is subject to change as public health information develops, and we plan to reevaluate it monthly.

Cost

Registration fees are $300 and payment is due from successful applicants by April 30. Financial assistance is available to families who require it. We also encourage folks to apply for funding through Creative Kids. To learn more, Contact us.

Camper selection

GRR! values diversity, and selects campers with this in mind. We perform a delicate balancing act of creating a demographic of campers that represent a broad array of ages, instrument selections, ethnic and gender identities, and home addresses.

Camper commitment

Camp is jam-packed and a team effort so campers must be able to fully attend each day, including the Saturday showcase.

Mentors

Each band will have a Band Coach, Band Manager as well instrument instructors to guide them through the week - in addition to volunteers, workshops instructors and a mental health professional who's there for those needing additional support. All mentors must pass a criminal record check and follow all GRR! policies.

Musical experience

No previous musical experience is required to take part in GRR!, though youth with musical experience are also encouraged to attend. All skill levels are welcome!

Instruments

Instruments will be provided for all campers. Campers will indicate a first and second instrument choice, and every effort will be made to accommodate them. Instruments cannot be taken home.

Lunch

Campers should bring a bagged lunch (very limited refrigeration available). GRR! will provide healthy snacks throughout the day. Please indicate any dietary needs on the registration.
